Yes, you can transfer your current mobile number to the new operator free of charge. When you make your request, state your current customer number and the SIM card number, if any, and the new operator will arrange everything with the previous provider.
Usually, you have good mobile phone reception everywhere in Belgium. 4G is available almost everywhere, or at least 3G reception. The BIPT makes a network coverage map available free of charge. View the map here.
With a smartphone deal you get a big discount on your new mobile phone when you combine it with a new mobile subscription. So you can get a new iPhone for as little as 1 euro instead of paying full price.
A Data-only sim card allows you to connect to the internet anywhere in Belgium. The data bundle is available in the EU as well, however, some providers can claim additionals costs to EU usage.
Discounts can sometimes be as much as the full handset price. The discount usually depends on the type of subscription that you take out with it. More expensive mobile phone subscriptions give you a bigger discount.
The discount you receive often depends on the size of your subscription. A €10 monthly subscription will of course give you a much smaller discount than a €40 monthly subscription.
A joint-offer deal is a combination deal where you buy a new mobile phone together with a mobile subscription. So you receive both a SIM card and a phone.
A sim-only deal is another term for when you buy a separate mobile phone subscription. You only receive a SIM card, not a mobile phone.
Do your friends still call you? No problem, they can still call and text you. And if you want to make a call, just use WhatsApp, for example. Of course, you can still call emergency numbers and freephone numbers.
No, switching to another mobile phone operator is free, provided you have taken into account the minimum contract duration of 6 months. After 6 months you can switch for free. If you want to switch sooner, you sometimes have to pay a cancellation fee that is a maximum of the remaining subscription fee up to those 6 months.
Switching to another cell phone operator is free and can be requested at any time. With a prepaid card, there is no minimum contract duration. Keep in mind that you will lose your call credit, it is not transferred to another operator, nor can you set the transfer to take effect when your current call credit is used up.
When you top up again, you often receive a top-up bonus; this is a bundle with a lot of free calling minutes, texting and mobile data that you can use up for 30 or 31 days. After that first month, the free bundle usually expires, and you call or text at the rates per min/sms/mb. You can choose the amount you want to top up each month, and thus receive a different bonus.
Granted, switching your mobile phone provider is more cumbersome than switching your energy supplier. You have to wait until you receive the new SIM card, and then you have to wait again until your number is transferred, and then you have to physically swap the SIM cards. But all in all, this takes up very little time and you can do most everything online.
No, definitely do not! Let the new operator arrange this with the old provider. That way, you avoid problems because everything is done in the right order. Leave it to the pro!
Many SIM only deals offer the possibility of making 'unlimited' calls, sending text messages or using data. Usually, a Fair Use Policy is applied to this. The normal user will hardly ever be restrained by such an FUP. The only purpose of the FUP is to prevent gross abuse of the service. For example, you may not use this type of subscription to set up machine-to-machine communication services or run call centre-like activities. For that sort of thing, you are better off contracting other types of business subscriptions.
